Dumper Hire: Tracked, High-Lift or Swivel Tip?

By Staff4dshire Group · Staff4dshire Plant Hire

Dumpers are the unsung heroes of any groundworks or landscaping job. The right one keeps spoil and materials moving; the wrong one either cannot get where you need it or holds up the digger. Here is how to pick from the dumpers in our hire fleet.

Dumper Hire: Tracked, High-Lift or Swivel Tip?

0.5t tracked micro dumpers

Tracked micro dumpers are built for tight access: side passages, gateways and back gardens. The tracks spread the weight on soft ground and lawns, and they will climb slopes and kerbs that would stop a wheelbarrow. They are perfect partners for a micro or mini digger on garden jobs.

1t high-lift dumpers

A high-lift dumper raises its skip before tipping, so you can load straight into a skip or the back of a tipper lorry. That saves double handling when you are clearing spoil from a garden or a small site.

2t and 3t dumpers

Two and three tonne dumpers suit most domestic and small commercial sites with reasonable access: extensions, driveway dig-outs and drainage jobs. They carry far more per trip than a micro dumper and keep up with a mini digger.

6t and 9t dumpers

For bigger sites, bulk excavation and longer haul distances on site, 6t and 9t dumpers move serious volumes. Pair them with an 8t or 9.5t digger and the job keeps flowing.

Straight tip or swivel tip?

A straight-tip dumper tips forwards only, so the driver has to line up with where the material is going. A swivel-tip skip rotates, so you can tip to the side, for example along a trench or onto a stockpile, without repositioning. Swivel dumpers are especially useful for backfilling trenches and working along narrow sites. Both are available in our fleet.

Safety first

Dumpers should only be driven by people who are competent to do so. Always wear the seat belt where fitted, keep loads within the rated capacity, avoid sharp turns on slopes, keep well back from trench and excavation edges and keep people clear of the machine. If in doubt, hire with an operator or ask us for advice.

Matching the dumper to the digger

A dumper and a digger work as a pair, so size them together. A small digger loading a large dumper wastes time filling it; a large digger can overwhelm a small one. As a rough approach, think about how many buckets it takes to fill the skip, and choose a dumper that keeps the digger working rather than waiting.

Think about where the spoil is going, too. If it is being tipped into a skip, a high-tip dumper saves double handling. If it is being spread on site, a swivel skip lets the driver tip to the side in confined areas.

Ground, slopes and access

Measure the narrowest point on the route, including gateways, side passages and any steps. Check the route for slopes, soft ground and drainage covers that may not take the weight. Tracked dumpers suit soft ground and gardens, while wheeled dumpers are quicker on firm, level sites and roads within the site. Avoid driving across slopes, keep loads within the rated capacity and travel with the skip low.

Licences and training

Anyone driving a dumper should be competent and trained to use it. On commercial sites you will usually be asked for a recognised plant operator card. For a homeowner hiring a small dumper, ask the hire company to run through the controls, pre-use checks and safe tipping before they leave.

Before you book

Write down what you are moving, how far, over what ground and how often. With that information, a hire company can recommend the right machine instead of the biggest one on the yard.
