Mini Digger Hire Guide: Choosing the Right Size

By Staff4dshire Group · Staff4dshire Plant Hire

Hiring a digger can save days of hard labour, but picking the wrong size can cost you time, damage your garden or simply not get the job done. This guide explains the main digger sizes in our hire fleet, what each one is good for, and when it is worth hiring a digger with a driver instead.

Mini Digger Hire Guide: Choosing the Right Size

Start with access

The first question is not how big the job is, but how you will get the machine to it. Measure the narrowest point between the road and the work area: side passages, gates, garden steps. Check for overhead cables, slopes and soft ground. Micro diggers can get through surprisingly narrow gaps; larger machines need a proper route and somewhere to unload from a lorry.

Micro diggers (approx. 1t)

Micro diggers are ideal for rear gardens with restricted access, digging out for patios and paths, small trenches and landscaping. They are light, easy to transport and less likely to damage lawns and surfaces. The trade-off is reach, dig depth and speed on bigger volumes.

Mini diggers and 2t to 3t machines

Mini diggers in the 1.5t to 3t range are the workhorses for domestic groundworks: footings for small extensions, drainage runs, digging out for driveways and garden landscaping. They have more reach and power than a micro but are still compact enough for many domestic sites.

4t to 5t diggers

Moving up to 4t or 5t gives you noticeably more reach, dig depth and lifting capacity. These suit larger extensions, longer drainage and utility trenches, bigger driveway dig-outs and small development plots. They need wider access and usually come on a lorry.

8t and 9.5t diggers

For bulk excavation, cut and fill, larger foundations and site clearance, our 8t and 9.5t machines move material much faster. On these sizes, grabs are also available, which are useful for sorting and loading material. These machines are best on sites with good access and space to work safely.

Attachments

The right attachment can make a digger far more useful. We have breakers and augers for every digger size, and grabs for the 8t and 9.5t machines. Breakers deal with concrete and hard ground, augers drill holes for posts and piles, and grabs handle loose material and loading.

Do you need a dumper and roller too?

Digging is only half the job. Spoil has to be moved and new sub-bases need compacting. A tracked micro dumper or high-lift dumper can save a lot of barrow trips, and a pedestrian, trench or ride-on roller gives a properly compacted base for drives, paths and patios.

Self-drive or digger with driver?

If you are confident and experienced, self-drive hire can work well for simple jobs. For anything near services, close to buildings, involving deep trenches or where time matters, a digger with driver is often the better choice. An experienced operator works faster, safer and with less risk of damage. Before any digging, check for underground services and keep people clear of the machine.

Getting the most from a hire

Plan the work before the machine arrives. Mark out the dig, locate and mark buried services, and arrange a skip or a muck-away so spoil does not pile up around the machine. A dumper alongside the digger often doubles the amount of work you can get through in a day. If ground conditions are wet, protecting lawns and paths with boards or track mats saves a lot of reinstatement afterwards.

At the end of the hire, clean the machine down and report any damage or problems honestly. It makes the return quicker and avoids disputes.

Safety first

Never dig near buried cables or pipes without checking for them first, using utility plans and a cable locator. Keep people out of the machine's working area, and do not work close to the edge of an unsupported trench. If you are not confident operating a digger, consider hiring it with an operator.
